Women at Risk for Cancer after Power Morcellation Surgery

On April 17, 2014, the FDA issued a warning to doctors and women that laparoscopic robotic hysterectomies and fibroid removal surgeries done with a power morcellation device can cause the spread of aggressive uterine cancers. Today there are more than dozen power morcellation devices on the market, but the largest manufacturer of power morcellators - Johnson & Johnson’s Ethicon 360 division - decided to voluntarily withdraw its device from the market until further medical guidelines are established.
